Plum Island Paradise

Happy Spring New England! The days are getting longer and warmer and thankfully the evil throes of Winter are behind us here in the Northern Hemisphere. Unfortunately, this particularly brutal winter is leaving behind a even more battered and beaten Plum Island (Globe story here) in its wake. After being closed since the most recent March storm a few weeks ago, PI opened again this weekend but the coastline has been changed dramatically yet again. Although it’s an inevitable occurrence as a barrier beach, it’s nevertheless sad to witness such a beautiful local hidden gem slowly get eaten away year after year. It’s one of my favorite places in the world and I go out to the Parker River Refuge as often as I can and in all seasons. After living in the jungles of Nepal, I am a certified birding geek and the refuge is regarded one of the top birding sites in the country with over 350 different species recorded. As a photographer, its boundless and diverse landscapes always astound and it’s also a go-to location for KLP’s Family Portrait Sessions offering weathered boardwalks, endless beaches and sweeping 360 degree views. Fun Fact: Plum Island gets its name from the wild beach plum shrubs that grow on its dunes.

If you go, be sure to stop for a BYOB brunch or breakfast at Mad’s Martha’s Island Cafe or a sunset cocktail at another favorite spot – The Plum Island Grille.
